As we prepare for our 43rd annual Easterval activities in Union Island, its is important we look back at where we came from. Easter festivities in union Island began in 1966 and was organise mainly by the Selby family who were unionites based in Trinidad. The program then only included athletics, sailing boat and pumpkin wood boat racing, which took place in Ashton Harbour while the land activities were held in salt pond. Participant received prizes sponsored by Trini-Unionites. As the event evolved the hosting venue for the festival shifted to the Clifton Harbour but still the festival was a 2 day event,(easter saturday & Sunday). Groups such as Rising Sun and OSDER managed the festivities over the years and played their part in the surprising growth of the festival.
In the late 1980's a group of young ambitious well educated men joined together under the name Organisation for Social Development and Educational Reform(OSDER). Their impact was felt far and wide as the oversaw the festival moving from a two day even to ten days which it is at present. It was OSDER who spearheaded the inclusion of regional participation into the festival, whether it's in sports or culture. Their main goal was to integrate the region through sports and culture. This was evident in 1989 when three Prime Ministers were present at the opening of the festival in 1989.
Like the previous Organisers the continued growth of the festival was too much for OSDER to carry, then the sort to include other community groups and together they formed the Union Island Easterval Committee. This committee although members changed is still the organisers for the festival today.
The festival this year has undergone some significant changes the major change this year the switch of the Miss Easterval Pageant from the normal easter sunday to saturday, while the soca fest is now being held on the sunday straight into the jouvert. Another of the changes is the reintroduction of the fun day at clifton market square now dubbed "festival Day" on April 11th. The festival continues to grow and this year the festival will be broadcasted via the internet through TopRoadLIVERadio.com. The launching of this website will further enhance the promotion and marketing of the festival and thus i will like to thank Wilcina Longdon and family for there effort and their contribution in making this dreams of ours a reality.
